A rat is a rat

So, Berlusconi's arrogance disappeared yesterday in front of a crowd of citizens celebrating his resignation. Like a rat he escaped from a back door of the President's palace.

I do not recall seeing anything similar in the past history of Italy apart from pictures of the crowd shouting at Mussolini's corps in Milan. And it was significant to see people with posters stating that yesterday it was for them a new 25th of April (see the title of my blog ?).

Piazza del Quirinale (the square he escaped from) was in a way like Piazzale Loreto (where Mussolini's corps was hanged). But yesterday it was joy, and not for nothing an orchestra was playing the Hendel alleluja...

We enjoyed the day, now difficulties start

Mr. B. or Mr. ....

Elsa Morante, an Italian writer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elsa_Morante ) wrote:

“ During his career, the Head of the Government committed repeatedly crimes that, in front of a honest population, would have warranted condemnation, shame and the withdrawal of any government mandate. Why the people accepted and even applauded such crimes ?
Some for lack of moral sensitivity, some for ruse, some for personal interest and benefit.
The majority did of course recognize his criminal activities, but preferred to vote for the one who had the power than for the one who was a just man.
Regrettably, the Italians, if they have to choose between duty and personal interest, and although they know what their duty should be, always chose their personal interest.
So, a mediocre man, coarse, with a vulgar but effective language, is a perfect example of his countrymen.
If he were in a country of honest people, he could just be the leader of a party with limited audience, a person a bit ridiculous for his manners, his attitude, his delusions of grandeur, offensive to the common sense of people because of his emphatic and immodest style.
In Italy, he became the Head of the Government. And it is difficult to find a better sample of an Italian man.
Admirer of strong power, mercenary, corrupt, catholic without faith in God, presumptuous, vain, falsely good-humoured, good father but with many lovers, he uses those he despises, he surrounds himself of dishonest people, of liars, of chancers ; skilful mime, so good to be able to impress a vulgar audience, but, like any mime, without his own character, he always believes that he is the person he wants to perform”

Do you think of Berlusconi’s portrait ? but how could it be: Elsa Morante died in 1985 and Berlusconi entered politics in 1995 ! In fact, Elas Morante wrote this in 1945 talking about Mussolini….
(written on 1 May 1945, titled “the Head of the Government”. Published posthumously on February 1988 in “Paragone letteratura”)

MAFIA

A couple of days ago, in one of his delirious speeches, Berlusconi came out with a new pledge: I will destroy the Mafia.

Indeed he has the right credentials:

- his party was founded by a friend of his, M. dell'Utri, now MP in his party, and also condemned to 9 year imprisonment for Mafia and still under investigation for other mafia related affairs (he was elected so that he would be protected by the MPs immunity);

- he declared that his house aide, condemned to life imprisonment for Mafia, was in fact a "hero" (sic);

- since one year, and in spite of a 570 pages report by the local government representative (Prefetto) in charge, among others of security, asking for the dismissal of the Fondi's (a city in the South) civil council, he has refused to do so to the point that the national association of Prefetti has issued a formal public complaint.

- and several books were published showing that the Mafia financed the initial mage construction projects of Berlusconi.

Unless we misunderstood, as usual....Was he talking about another Mafia, that controls less than 10% of Italian TV while he controls the 90%, or that of the Press that dares to aski him questions....

Or, worse, thinking at the one who had managed to destroy the Mafia, Mussolini, he is preparing a request to get the same powers Mussolini had with the excuse of the fight against Mafia,

Whatever, one more bluff, one more idiotic promise made during a TV speech....Sad but we are getting used to it.
